Single-use plastic pollution in small island developing states (SIDS) : a review of legislative challenges and pathways to resilience with a focus on Seychelles

Single-use plastic (SUP) pollution is a critical threat multiplier in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), directly undermining their ability to adapt to climate change. This report, conducted as part of the RECOVER project, is a literature review of the legislative challenges and adaptation pathways related to SUP pollution. Using Seychelles as a central case study, it illustrates pan SIDS crisis where poor waste management is not just an environmental problem, but a primary driver of climate vulnerability, intensifying disaster risks and deepening socio-economic inequalities. The analysis reveals a fundamental and dangerous disconnect- while many SIDS have enacted SUP bans, waste management is rarely treated as a core climate adaptation strategy.
