Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in African urban cities
/
Nature-based solutions (NbS) have become a vital focus in climate adaptation policy, finance, and practice. Based on evidence from the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, nature-based actions can cool urban areas, reduce flood risk, improve water availability, and enhance agricultural productivity.
What are Nature-based Solutions?
Nature-based solutions are more than just planting trees. They are strategic actions, ranging from protection and restoration to sustainable management and design, that work with natural ecosystems to address social, economic and environmental challenges.
Whether it is sustainable urban drainage systems, wetland restoration or urban sustainable food gardens, nature-based solutions offer a versatile approach for human wellbeing, biodiversity and climate benefits.
Do Nature-based Solutions work?
The answer is yes. But only when they are designed with the specific local context in mind.
To be truly effective and equitable, nature-based solutions must be linked as a series of actions across the landscape rather than relying on a single project or intervention. They must also bring diverse voices into the decision-making process to manage power dynamics and ensure benefits reach those who need them most.
It is imperative that nature-based solutions improve local biodiversity, including providing a habitat for naturally occurring plants and animals.
