New thematic summaries unveil innovative research for climate adaptation and resilience
/
The Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) programme has recently launched three new thematic summaries that highlight innovative research for climate adaptation and resilience. These summaries provide critical insights into flood risk management, water scarcity, and urban resilience strategies across Africa and Asia. As climate change intensifies, these research findings are more important than ever for policymakers, practitioners, and communities working towards sustainable and inclusive climate adaptation.

1. Addressing Flood Risk in a Changing Climate
Flooding remains one of the most pressing climate-related hazards, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities in the Global South. This summary outlines the work of CLARE projects that are aiming to improve flood forecasting, enhance early warning systems, and support effective decision-making for flood adaptation.
By modelling complex flooding scenarios and understanding the socio-economic impacts of climate hazards, especially on vulnerable groups, CLARE projects are helping regions better anticipate and respond to flood risks. The work also integrates gender and economic considerations to ensure that adaptation strategies are both equitable and effective.

2. Innovating to Tackle Water Scarcity
With two billion people lacking access to safe drinking water, innovative approaches are crucial for addressing water insecurity. This summary explores how CLARE projects leverage anticipatory action, behavioral science, and integrated water management to enhance climate resilience.
To address growing water insecurity, CLARE projects are employing interventions aimed to empower local communities, particularly in drought-prone areas, with the skills and systems they need to manage water resources more sustainably amid changing climate conditions.

3. Building Climate-Resilient Cities
Urbanization is accelerating, particularly in Africa and Asia, increasing the exposure of cities to climate risks. This summary highlights CLARE’s research on urban resilience, focusing on how informal settlements can better integrate climate adaptation planning.
As urban populations grow, especially in informal settlements, CLARE’s work supports cities in planning inclusive, sustainable climate responses. Projects are building capacity for nature-based solutions, gender-sensitive adaptation, and migration planning as resilience strategies, helping cities adapt to climate extremes.
These summaries offer insights for policymakers, researchers, and community leaders working on climate adaptation and resilience. Download to explore evidence-based solutions by clicking the relevant link below:
