CLARE R4I Opportunities Fund

The R4I Opportunities Fund is an innovative and demand-led fund (now closed) which supported the needs of decision-makers in Africa and Asia-Pacific to adapt to climate change using existing research and evidence.

Launched by CLARE at COP28, the R4I Opportunities Fund was designed to carry insights, data, tools and approaches identified from past and existing adaptation and resilience evidence toward transformative outcomes.

With over USD 1 million in funding distributed across 22-demand-led opportunities, the fund delivers on CLARE’s theory of change by enabling the uptake of an existing wealth of research to inform science-based decision-making.

One example of an opportunity supported through the Opportunities Fund:
Through a learning exchange between Rajkot, India and Nairobi, Kenya, the CLARE R4I Opportunities Fund supported the growing need to incorporate actionable, country and context-specific heat action plans to manage rising heat challenges.

Existing research and evidence

To date, the fund has supported 20 short-term, small-scale interventions across a broad Africa and Asia-Pacific reach – scoped directly with in-country stakeholders, drawing on local expertise – to enable the use of existing research and evidence in new and creative ways.

Opportunities selected demonstrated they could be sustainable, detailed activities both responsive to and aligned with gender equity and inclusivity (GEI) considerations and were deeply connected to the CLARE research themes

As a result, the R4I Opportunities Fund is demonstrating the results of targeted knowledge brokering to get research and evidence into use, strengthening agency in the Global South to do and use research on adaptation.
